DWI warrant issued for driver involved in Willis-area head-on crash
Five people, including a child, were hospitalized late Thursday following a head-on crash on Calvary Road about a mile west of Interstate 45 in the Willis area.
Authorities are issuing a Driving While Intoxicated arrest warrant for one male driver sent to the hospital and later released and who they say caused the collision by driving the opposite way, said Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Erik Burse.
Authorities said the woman in the Kia Rio drove eastbound on Calvary Road while the driver of the Land Cruiser drove westbound. The driver of the Dodge Journey had been driving at a high rate of speed while passing the Land Cruiser just under a bridge, police said. The Dodge then struck the Kia head-on.
The Kia was thrown into a ditch while the Dodge came to rest it the middle of the road, police said. Meanwhile, the Land Cruiser left the roadway and drove through a fence-line before striking a utility pole, snapping it off its base, police said.
Three cars suffered heavy damage and the people appeared to be trapped inside the vehicles, but no serious injuries were reported, according to Burse.
A woman and child appeared to be trapped inside a Kia, while a man and woman appeared trapped inside a Land Cruiser. All four were pulled from the vehicles and taken to the hospital in stable condition.
