New seven-seater SUV coming from SsangYong soon

There will be a new seven-seat SUV in the SsangYong range that will bridge the gap between the all-new mid-sized Korando and the established Rexton large SUV.

SsangYong has confirmed the new model will be built on a monocoque chassis rather than a ladder-frame setup like the Rexton, meaning customers can expect it to compete with the likes of the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Santa Fe, rather than the Ford Everest and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport - that's the Rexton's job.

Details are scant on the new SUV, but it is expected the model will follow SsangYong's existing strategy of being offered with two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, with the choice of petrol and diesel engines.

Chances are the new model could debut new engines and technology for the brand, and unlike the Rexton, it is expected to be offered with curtain airbags that extend to the third-row.

In terms of size, the new model will likely err on the larger side compared to the Korando, with a taller roof and longer body for better passenger space. For reference, the Rexton is 4755mm long, 1900mm wide and 1785mm tall, where the new Korando is 4450mm long, 1870mm wide and 1620mm tall.

It is expected the new model will launch in 2020.
