Kia Sorento 2021 to be revealed within six months: Toyota Kluger rival needs to aim up

The all-new Kia Sorento 2021 is destined to be revealed around the middle of 2020, the company’s local arm has confirmed.

The seven-seat large SUV - which competes with the likes of the Toyota Kluger, Mazda CX-9 and its Korean cousin, the Hyundai Santa Fe - will be all-new in its fourth-generation guise, and Kia’s Australian operations are eager to see it perform even better in the market than the current one. The images you see here are from, and they show a glimpse of what to expect of the all-new model.

The Sorento sold right now in Australia is a very competitive offering in terms of pricing, equipment and of course ownership promise, yet it has never soared to the heights it arguably deserves to when it comes to sales.

In 2019, for example, the Sorento sold just 3777 units. That was down 13.9 per cent on the previous year, and well below the likes of the aforementioned Kluger (11,371), CX-9 (7168) and Santa Fe (5857). Though the large SUV market was down more than the market overall in 2019, too, slumping 8.9 per cent (overall market: -7.8%).

“Yes, Sorento is down - it’s in it’s last year of its life-cycle, so we’re six months away from launching the new car,” said Damien Meredith, Kia Australia chief operating officer.

“The challenge for us with the new Sorento is to get that number up to around about 400-450 per month. We’ve been averaging around-about 320-350 with the current Sorento,” said Mr Meredith.

The company is essentially running-out the final versions of the current Sorento now.

“We’ve done (runout models) a little bit different - we’ve brought in a Sorento Black Edition, which is a value-add (model),” said Mr Meredith.

As you can see from these pictures, the 2021 Sorento will have a distinct new look to it, but seemingly similar proportions to the current version. We’ll keep you up to date with all the news on the all-new Sorento as soon as it comes to hand.
