New 2020 Kia Sorento revealed in official teaser pics
• Fourth-gen Sorento revealed a month ahead of official unveiling
• Sharp, angular exterior styling confirmed
• Plug-in hybrid powertrain expected
The photos of the all-new seven-seat SUV show a significantly more angular car than the previous Sorento. Earlier spy shots suggested a more steeply raked roofline than that of the outgoing model, giving the new Sorento a sharper look along with a redesigned tailgate. The official teaser images confirm the new look, which also includes vertical rear LED lights, LED headlights, and Kia’s trademark ‘tiger nose’ grille at the front.
Inside, the new Kia Sorento will be updated with the firm’s latest 10.25-inch infotainment system. Elsewhere, we expect the revised interior to gain in terms of quality with soft-touch materials throughout, and ambient mood lighting.
Kia is likely to offer the new Sorento with a diesel engine, with a choice of a six-speed manual gearbox or an eight-speed automatic. There’ll also be a plug-in hybrid model that is likely to combine a four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor and an automatic gearbox to offer enhanced fuel economy. All variants of the new family SUV will be four-wheel-drive with a seven-seat layout.
What does this mean for car buyers?
The growing interest in plug-in hybrid SUVs bodes well for the new Sorento, particularly given that this sector of the market is currently dominated by an array of expensive, upmarket rivals including the Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine Hybrid, Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid and Range Rover Sport PHEV. There are relatively few alternatives for less than £40,000 - the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, widely considered the first plug-in SUV, is arguably the most well known. Factor in Kia’s seven-year warranty and the new Sorento could prove very popular.
