Refreshed (and expanded) Kia Rio hatchback range hits SA...

Kia Motors South Africa has launched its refreshed Rio hatchback range, while also expanding the line-up with two extra base-spec variants.

The Korean firm says exterior updates have been “kept to a minimum”, though the hatch does gain a narrower grille, a wider front bumper and fresh foglamp trim.

Inside, the main change is an upgrade of the touchscreen – which is now standard across the range and boasts Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability – from a seven-inch item to an eight-inch display. An additional 12V power socket is also part of the interior refresh.

As before, the Rio range comprises four specification levels. While the base Rio 1,2 LS remains, Kia has added a 1,4-litre LS option as well, offered in both manual and automatic form.

Standard specification on LS models includes manual air-conditioning, electric windows, electric side mirrors, central locking (with an alarm and immobiliser), six speakers (up from four) and rake and reach adjustable steering. LS models furthermore gain 15-inch alloy wheels, replacing the previous model’s steel items.

Next is the LX trim level, which is available only with the 1,4-litre engine. It gains front foglamps, a centre console armrest, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear-shift lever, and a new 4,2-inch instrument cluster. Side mirrors now feature an auto-folding function with integrated indicators, while automatic headlamps have also been added. Electronic stability control and hill-start assist control are now also available from the LX grade up.

Then there’s the EX specification, which features projection headlamps, LED daytime running lights and reversing camera. The EX models furthermore upgrade from 15-inch wheels to 17-inch items.

As before, the Tec trim level sits at the very summit of the range, boasting items such as automatic air-conditioning, rain-sensing wipers, LED taillamps, cruise control, an electro-chromatic rearview mirror, alloy pedals and leather upholstery. The range-topper is also available with an optional sunroof for an extra R8 000.

Engines are carried over from the pre-facelift range and include the base 1,25-litre petrol unit with 61 kW and 120 N.m (and featuring a five-speed manual gearbox) along with the likewise naturally aspirated 1,4-litre mill producing 73 kW and 135 N.m, and available with the choice of a six-speed manual or an automatic transmission with the same number of cogs.

An five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty is included as standard. The Rio 1,2 LS features a two-year/60 000 km service plan, while 1,4-litre models enjoy a four-year/60 000 km arrangement.
